“The sex trade is a valid career option today if managed properly”
- Scarlett Lake, Vancouver Madam

A Safer Sex Trade is a one-hour TV documentary that explores the world of prostitution in Vancouver through the eyes of three women who work at different levels of the sex trade. This paradoxical and surprising story has unparalleled access and is put into sharp relief by the trial of Robert Willie Pickton, who has been charged with the alleged murder of 26 women, most of whom who worked in the sex trade. www.ag.gov.bc.ca/courts/pickton/index.htm

Production was completed in November of 2006 and the film enjoyed its world premiere to a packed theatre at the Whistler International Film Festival December 2nd. The documentary had its world television premiere on CBC Newsworld’s The Lens on January 23, 2007 at 10PM ET/7PM PT with a repeat screening January 27, 2007 AT 10PM ET/7PM PT.

A Safer Sex Trade is an original concept created by Carolyn Allain and co-written with David Ray, produced by their independent film company Cheap and Dirty Productions. Allain’s directorial debut offers insight into the complex issue of the sex trade by examining the lives of three women with entirely unique experiences as prostitutes.

Scarlett Lake is a highly successful madam with thirty years in the business who opens up the doors to her bawdy house. Jennifer Allan is a former drug addicted “survival” sex trade worker, who works tirelessly to rescue prostitutes still out on the streets. Simone is an independent escort who has worked her way up from the street and presently offers “girlfriend experiences” to her clients.

A Safer Sex Trade was produced in association with CBC Newsworld and in partnership with RDI and ATPN.

Carolyn Allain premiered her first feature film at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Fetching Cody, David Ray’s directorial debut, is a fantasy love story about a street kid utilizing the magic of a time machine to save his girlfriend’s life.  It won Best Feature Film at the Sedona International Film Festival and garnered a Gold Remi Award in science fiction at The Houston International Film Festival.

Cheap and Dirty Productions Inc. is a corporation formed in 2001. It is a partnership between Carolyn Allain and David Ray who both write, produce and direct. The intent of the corporation is to develop and produce independent-spirited high concept films and television for the domestic and international markets. The corporate mission is to instill marketplace projects with vision and intelligence, whether they be features, series or documentaries. Cheap and Dirty Productions Inc. is presently in development with two feature film projects entitled “Long Harbor” and “Kelly and Meryl”, both written by David Ray, as well as several documentaries, including a return to Farley Mowat’s “Sibir”.
